In manufacturing processes with a low degree of automation, the efficiency of production also depends to a large extent on the qualifications of employees. Targeted personnel planning is therefore becoming increasingly important for manufacturing companies. However, developing employees and promoting talent requires managers to be aware of the skills and qualifications of each individual in the team.
The skills matrix has proven to be a practical tool for determining skills requirements and planning in-company training. In this matrix, target requirements for the skills and abilities of employees are entered and compared with the current status of employee qualifications. The qualification matrix helps to identify bottlenecks in qualifications and to comply with the normative requirements of ISO 9001, provided it is clearly and concisely designed and data can be maintained quickly and easily. In order to display and manage the qualifications of its employees on a web-based basis, the internationally active Leoni AG from Nuremberg opted for a solution based on the latest SAP UI technologies.
Leoni AG is one of the leading suppliers of wires, optical fibers, cables and cable systems. Headquartered in Nuremberg, the company operates worldwide and has made a name for itself in particular as a supplier to the automotive industry. Leoni is currently reorganizing its HR structure in order to standardize processes globally. In this context, the company implemented an in-house development based on SAP ERP Human Capital Management (HCM) for mapping its qualification profiles, the so-called Qualification Matrix (QualiMatrix).
Automated processes play a subordinate role in the production of wires, fibers and cable systems, so that the employees at the individual workstations must each have special qualifications in order to be able to operate machines and systems correctly. With the QualiMatrix, the production managers in the individual Leoni plants create a personnel deployment plan according to the value of the employee qualifications. In addition, they receive an overview of the respective qualifications of an employee, recognize deficits and can act accordingly, for example to train employees or hire new personnel.
Functionalities that SAP does not offer as standard
In the QualiMatrix, each qualification is linked to a requirements profile that provides information on which specific qualifications are required for which job. In the past, Leoni used Excel and later a rudimentary in-house development. With this, for example, only a limited number of qualifications could be recorded. In addition, updating the qualification profiles was very time-consuming. In contrast, the QualiMatrix from projekt0708 GmbH, which was implemented in the first step for a Romanian plant, is web-based and is based on the latest SAPUI technologies. The complex in-house development offers functionalities that are not covered by the SAP standard and therefore allows users to handle the qualification data more flexibly. For example, the user interface is created dynamically based on the imported qualifications. This gives the production manager a quick overview of the type and scope of his employees' qualifications. He can also view the history and development of the qualifications by selecting different time periods to view.
The application also has various reporting functions, for example to provide an overview of all employees who are eligible to operate a workstation. If the production manager recognizes that an employee needs additional qualifications, for example, he sends them to the appropriate training course and then updates the employee's qualification profile in the application.
The print functions of the QualiMatrix are particularly important for Leoni, for example to provide employees with lists in paper form. This enables them to know which machines they are allowed to operate and which they are not. Leoni also uses this functionality to print out so-called badges that employees wear. Supervisors can use these to immediately recognize which specialist is allowed to work at which workplace.
Global HCM-Standards
Since the introduction of the solution, the corporation has benefited from numerous features: Individual employees are regularly evaluated in a transparent, comprehensible manner, the user interface is clearly structured, allowing for a quick overview of employee qualifications. The web-based QualiMatrix offers improved, time-saving, and location-independent handling of the corresponding personnel data as well as higher data and process quality.
p78 GmbH supported Leoni from the conception of processes to the technical integration of the software solution into the existing SAP ERP HCM system, all the way to the training of key users. In the next step, Leoni plans to roll out QualiMatrix to other plants to standardize the process across all company locations.
